Post Post subject: Half a decade's worth of anime, no possible way to choose?
Posted Fri Jun 06, 2003 6:13 pm

The basic problem is, I need some new anime to download.
Last week I finally finished collecting every single episode and OVA of Hunter x Hunter (Arghh the second OVA is the beginning of a new story arch, not an OVA at all, someone get the author to start writing those mangas more regularly! Back to the topic..). Now I have a few dozen animes with not enough to fill my downstream bandwidth. (Old habit from 56k days.)
I've tried just randomly downloading and sampling stuff, but that doesn't help, because it's easy to like one episode and find the entire series wholly unremarkable, or dislike one episode and find the somewhat pretty enjoyable. I don't know if it's possible to dislike one episode and find the entire series extremely memorable though.

Series I've collected/bought every single episode/dvd of:
Cowboy Bebop
Azumanga Daioh
Trigun
Hunter x Hunter

Yeah, not much, but in every single case I got hooked with the very first episode I saw.

The point-
Can people recommend animes that are serious, but not overly so, with humor that doesn't get in the way of everything else, character developement (self and intra-character) a must, non-combat focused (or at least with extremely well animated combat that uses little to no motion-streak backgrounds), with generally decent animation (doesn't need to be amazing), and not too much angst?

Yeah, lots of parameters, but I'm never gonna find that next anime for my never-forget list otherwise. E.g.- I saw somewhere here someone saying Shaman King was great and really similiar to Hunter x Hunter. Downloaded a few gigs. Funny, somewhat enjoyable, but just ... lacking somehow. Part of it is that they're absolutely never serious, but it's more than that.

Anyway I need to go eat now. Make -good- suggestions Wink

Ouch.

Hmm. RahXephon, Fruits Basket, Read or Die OAV. Last Exile, Scrapped Princess, Twelve Kingdoms/Juuni Kokki (angsty). Wolf's Rain, Gundam Seed, Scryed. Maybe Ghost in the Shell, Gunparade March?

I currently am following GITS-SAC, but didn't list it, since AFAIK, only 15 or so episodes have been released. I might as well also mention that I'm using Inuyasha as a random bandwidth hogger, since it has a ton of episodes, though I don't place it on the same level as the other 4 I listed above (ultra mega must-see).

As for the others, already downloaded an episode of Last Exile randomly yesterday, looks interesting, tiny bit angsty, I'm gonna check it out some more. Same thing with Read or Die, looks very nice, but it was just the 3rd OVA, don't know where I'm gonna get the first 2 parts, since basically I get everything from the newsgroups.

As for Wolf's Rain, I got the first episode when it was released, but it seemed angsty to me, what do you think?

I'm extremely fond of Get Backers at the moment. Lots of character developement, has moments were its serious and others when it has comedy. It does have a lotta fight scenes, but I think they are well done....

Also, Scrapped Princess is extremely good. I really enjoy fantasy-ish animes.

I've only seen a bit of D.N.Angel, but the episodes I've seen thus far were pretty good.

And of course....Naruto. Heh Razz

I second GunParade March, Last Exile, and Scrapped Princess.

Naruto I don't highly recommend in animated form anyway. Read the manga instead.

I used to watch Wolf's Rain, but found it go extremely boring at about the 10th episode. However that means I can't comment on whether or not the series improves after that.

Is the Heh for Naruto supposed to be some kind of sarcasm or inside joke or what?

Actually, I'm rather fond of it....but Draken is right about the manga....much much much better.

So...no I wasn't being sarcastic. I like Naruto....in both forms.

I'd agree about Gunparade March. I was pleasantly surprised by that series. Wasn't expecting too much at all, but it turned out ok. Kind of like a semi-serious Love Hina-at-war or something.

Get Backers is getting real good.

Naruto, in case you didn't know, is voiced by Gon from Hunter x Hunter. So you'd feel right at home in that aspect, anyhow... Wink

Highly recommended (but you should buy the DVDs) are Fruits Basket and Read or Die. Very very good, both of them.

I have no new suggestions. The guidelines are pretty anal. Err, narrow. Yeah... Wink

Infinite Ryvius - gets very serious and somewhat angsty but not in that overtly annoying EVA or .hack//sign way.
Last Exile - superb animation (inc. action/fight sequences), little angst, quite entertaining.
Escaflowne - an anime that is very well-rounded. Good animation, character development, humour, drama etc.

I was going to follow your parameters.. but Azu, Trigun and HxH pretty much break your mould, so I'll add some well-regarded anime Smile

Fruit Basket.
Hikaru no Go.
Macross Zero (just coz its new and ultra flashy).
One Piece. (HxH fans love it).
Kenshin OVA (1st OVA, not the movie or the 2nd OVA).
Gundam Seed. (Best Gundam series since hmm probably Gundam 08th)

Damn, I really need a new hard drive soon.

Hikaru no Go- Saw an episode a long time ago, seemed really overly melodramatic, especially considering the wacky premise of a Go player's spirit etc, etc.

Kenshin- Doesn't anyone think Kenshin (in the series) is really just annoying? He takes abuse for very little reason, and the action is really motion trail flashy and artificially stretched. People say Trigun copies Kenshin, but hell, I saw it improves on it.

Gundam- I don't like Gundam. Not mecha stuff, just Gundam. {irrational dislike on}

HIkaru no Go was interesting at first. Even though I couldn't really figure out why it was interesting or why I kept watching it. Then it just got kind of old.

Kenshin: Well I didn't like some of how Kenshin acted, I really enjoyed the series. (Unless we're talking about the butchered version on cartoon network...)

Gundam Seed, is the first Gundam show I have ever gotten into. I've tried watching the other series at one time or another and I just couldn't get into them. Give Gundam Seed a try, if you don't like it you can PM me lots of hate mail. Very Happy

Gundam 08th MS Team. Still the best Gundam show, I think.
